Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) -a public institution established in 1990- is integrated within the city, participating in its dynamism. With its commitment to original research and a pioneer in this field, it leads three fundamental projects: the Parc de Recerca Biomèdica [Biomedical Research Park], the Parc Barcelona Media [Barcelona Media Park] and the Ciutadella Campus. The UPF has been classified as a Campus d'Excel·lència Internacional (CIE) [Campus of International Excellence] in a move promoted by the Education Ministry in order to position Spanish universities of excellence among the best in Europe. The prestige of the UPF is internationally recognised both thanks to its research and to its teaching. The European Commission has recognised the Department of Economics and Business of the UPF as one of the main centres of economic research in Europe and its PhD programme as a "Programme of Excellence".
The UPF teaches courses within the following areas: Law; Economics and Business; Political Science; Humanities and Translation; Experimental and Health Sciences; Journalism and Audiovisual Media and Information and Communication Technologies. The UPF is one of the two Spanish universities on the Times Higher Education (THE) Ranking. Internationally, it is in 155 th position, and in the classification of the best European universities, it is 58th. The postgraduate programmes of the UPF incorporate a wide range of official postgraduate studies, with master's and PhD programmes, whose aim is academic and professional specialisation or the initiation of research activities, as well as master's and postgraduate programmes for professional development.
In 1993, the Pompeu Fabra University promoted, together with a group of companies and economic institutions, the establishment of the Fundació Institut d'Educació Contínua, a private foundation arising from the commitment to lifelong learning with a global outlook and local roots.
The Fundació Privada Institut d'Educació Contínua is a link between Pompeu Fabra University and society, an instrument to bring together the business world, professionals and society within highly specialised sectors, the updating of knowledge and professional recycling. In line with the aims of the UPF, as a public university, in the teaching and research areas, the Fundació Privada Institut d'Educació Contínua offers lifelong learning services according to social needs in the form, place and time in which they are required.
The latest challenge of the Fundació Privada Institut d'Educació Contínua has, since 2010, been to promote, together with the UPF Department of Economics and Business, the Barcelona School of Management, focused on leadership and business management and public administration. In addition, since 1993, IDEC-Pompeu Fabra University, together with other departments of the University, has been specialising in programmes within the following areas: law, cultural management, information and telecommunication management, health and social welfare, language and translation, innovation and education sciences, communication and journalism, communication and audiovisual media, advertising and corporate reputation and creativity in digital media.
With the aim of supporting internationalisation and promoting excellence, in 2008 Pompeu Fabra University, together with the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, created the Aliança A4U. Its objective is to promote mobility among faculty and doctors and to encourage projects both within the European Higher Education Area and the European Research Area.
